What If We’ve Been Describing Senior Living All Wrong?

January 19, 2026 | Blog

By Constance Sablan, VP of Sales & Marketing

This week, I tuned into the Senior Housing News webinar, “2026 Senior Living Marketing Reality Check,” and heard thoughtful perspectives on where our industry is headed. One conversation in particular stayed with me, not because it was new, but because it challenged something we’ve been saying for years.

I’ve spent much of my career in senior living (or senior living-adjacent roles). I started out in a community on the coast of Carlsbad, California, where we often described senior living as “living on a cruise ship.” At the time, it worked. The comparison was visual. It was easy to understand. And for a retired audience, it resonated.

Years later, that metaphor still circulates. During Monday’s webinar, another comparison surfaced. Maybe senior living today is more like choosing your country club.

But then it hit me.

Senior living doesn’t remind me of a cruise ship. It doesn’t remind me of a country club. It reminds me of college. And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.

The College Parallel

Think about what college represents, not just the campus, but the experience.

  • Communal living.
  • A supportive environment designed to help you grow.
  • Dining experiences that bring people together.
  • Activities and clubs that spark curiosity.
  • Opportunities to learn, try something new, or rediscover a passion.
  • New friendships that form over shared experiences.
  • Moments of challenge and struggle that end up being defining and life-changing.
  • Stories you truly couldn’t make up.
  • And adventures you never expected to have at that stage of life.

That’s senior living.

Just like college, senior living can be a chapter that shapes you, and just like college, not everything feels easy at first. New residents may miss home, familiar routines, and the comfort of what they have always known. They may feel uncertain, a little out of place, or hesitant as they try new things and begin to meet new people. Families often carry their own emotions, including guilt after dropping off a loved one, wondering if they did the right thing, replaying the goodbye in their minds or aching after receiving a “I want to come home” call.

Those feelings are real, and they are normal. And just as with any meaningful transition, they do not last forever. In this environment, residents are surrounded by thoughtful support, purposeful programming, and people who genuinely care, including professionals and neighbors alike, who help turn uncertainty into confidence and a new place into home.

You Don’t Just “End Up” Somewhere

No one accidentally chooses the right college. You explore your options. You tour campuses. You ask questions. You think about culture, values, lifestyle, and whether the environment will support who you are and what you need.

Senior living deserves that same thoughtful approach. Yet too often, families feel rushed, overwhelmed, or uncertain about where to start. They may focus only on what they’re leaving behind instead of what lies ahead.

At Saga Senior Living, we believe senior living isn’t about closing a chapter, it’s about starting the next one, and living it well.

And just like narrowing in on your top college pick, you need to ask:

  • Does this community reflect your values?
  • Does it support your independence while offering the right level of care?
  • Will it challenge you, engage you, and connect you?
  • Can you see yourself growing here, not just living here?

Guidance Matters

When we were choosing colleges, most of us didn’t do it alone. We leaned on guidance counselors, mentors, parents, and trusted advisors. It was all the people who helped us see options we might not have considered and asked questions we didn’t know to ask.

It’s the same in selecting senior living. Consult your family, friends, trusted advisors and reach out to senior living communities for more information.

Our Community Relations Directors are here to help you navigate the options. They’re not there to “sell” a community. They’re there to guide, listen, and help you understand this emotional and unfamiliar journey. They take the time to understand your story, your goals, your concerns, and what matters most to you. Think of them as your admissions counselors for this next chapter.

No Mascots, But Plenty of Fun

Now, will you find mascots or marching bands? Probably not. But you will find laughter. You will find connection. You will find purpose, learning, creativity, and moments of joy—often in places you didn’t expect.

Senior living communities are full of energy, stories, friendships, and experiences that continue to shape lives every single day. And the best way to understand that? Come see for yourself. Tour the community. Meet the people. Join an activity. Feel the culture. Ask the questions.

The Beginning of a New Story

My hope for our industry, and for every adult and family exploring senior living, is that we begin to reframe the narrative. Embrace senior living the way you would a college experience. Lean into the unknown. Be curious. Ask questions. Trust the process and the people guiding you through it.

Because senior living isn’t the end of the story. It’s the beginning of a new one.

And at Saga Senior Living, we’re honored to help you choose where your next chapter will be well lived.

Saga Senior Living offers a continuum of personalized support to seniors that evolves with you, ensuring every resident receives exactly what they need to thrive.
